What are job seekers looking for in 2023?
Mark Smith: We are now joined by Leanne Lazarus. G'day, Leanne. How's the weather up in Queensland?

Leanne Lazarus: It is blue skies, sunshine, a little bit colder than normal, but I think for most parts down south, it would be classified as warm still. It's probably a chilly 24 or something like that.

Mark Smith: That's probably warm. So, Leanne, you've got some observations about job seekers and what they're looking for right now.

Leanne Lazarus: Absolutely. I think there's a fairly big disparity between what a lot of hiring managers assume candidates are looking for and what they are actually looking for in the market at the moment. Salary is still really important, but there's a lot more to it. We're seeing a lot more candidates coming through that are looking for career opportunities, growth, succession planning, and training and development.

Mark Smith: Flexibility is still a request that is coming through, but we have seen a bit of a shift in that.

Leanne Lazarus: Absolutely. Flexibility is still a request, and we have seen a bit of a shift in that.

Mark Smith: The interesting thing is there is a big drive at the moment for candidates that are looking for roles that have a purpose to them.

Leanne Lazarus: Yes, candidates are looking for roles that have a purpose, whether it's community-focused or adding value back into the economy. That's a big driver for a lot of candidates.

Mark Smith: That's almost a shift back to what pre-COVID was like, number one.

Leanne Lazarus: Absolutely, it is a shift back to what pre-COVID was like.

Mark Smith: The interesting thing I find in the market is when I talk to a lot of organizations, they have a lot of perks and benefits, but they don't talk about them very much.

Leanne Lazarus: Exactly, organizations have a lot of perks and benefits, but they don't talk about them very much. If they're selling it as a package, including salary and all the other things they're offering, they will find more attraction from quality candidates.

Mark Smith: I'm biased, but I think that's one of the reasons why you should use a recruiter because a recruiter can actually advocate for all of those benefits for you on your behalf.

Leanne Lazarus: Absolutely. Using a recruiter can help advocate for all those benefits on behalf of the employer.

Mark Smith: Is there any one piece of advice you'd give to a hiring manager that's watching this now, saying, "I can't seem to attract the right talent right now"?

Leanne Lazarus: Focus on your brand as a business because candidates nowadays are doing a lot of homework into organizations and reputation.

Mark Smith: Excellent. Good. Thank you once again, Leanne, for joining P2P Live. Hopefully, we'll see you again soon.
